Reduced-Fee Therapy in Princeton, NJ

Thoughtful, high-quality care at a more accessible fee

The cost of therapy can be a significant barrier—particularly for people whose insurance does not include out-of-network mental health benefits, who have a high deductible, or who prefer not to use insurance.

Princeton Psychotherapy Center offers a limited number of reduced-fee appointments through our Reduced-Fee Therapy Program. Therapy is provided by a carefully selected postdoctoral fellow—a clinician who has earned a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and is completing advanced supervised experience before becoming independently licensed as a psychologist. This allows more people to receive attentive, individualized therapy within our practice at a substantially lower cost.

Our Reduced-Fee Therapy Program

Our focused Reduced-Fee Therapy Program includes:

  • Up to 8 weekly individual therapy sessions

  • A fee of $50 per session

  • In-person appointments in Princeton or virtual appointments throughout New Jersey

  • Care provided by a doctoral-level postdoctoral fellow under the supervision of Melissa Greenberg, PsyD (Licensed Psychologist)

We start with a free 15-minute phone consultation, which helps us determine whether a focused, short-term course of therapy is likely to be helpful for your particular concerns. Because this program is designed to be time-limited, it may not be the right fit for individuals who need ongoing or intensive treatment.

During the eight sessions, you and your therapist will identify the concerns you would most like to address, establish goals for your work together, and work toward meaningful changes, which may include symptom relief, greater insight, and more effective ways of coping. Near the end of the program, you will discuss your progress and appropriate next steps.

What Is a Postdoctoral Fellow?

A postdoctoral fellow is a clinician who has earned a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and completed extensive graduate training and supervised clinical experience, including a clinical internship. The fellowship is an additional period of advanced clinical work completed under supervision while the clinician works toward independent licensure as a psychologist.

Our postdoctoral fellows are selected carefully based on the strength of their clinical training, judgment, professionalism, and alignment with our practice’s thoughtful and individualized approach to therapy.

As required by the New Jersey State Board of Psychological Examiners, the fellow practices under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. The supervisor provides ongoing consultation and retains professional responsibility for the supervised care. Your postdoctoral therapist is the person you will meet with each week; supervision provides an additional layer of clinical thought and oversight behind the scenes.

Postdoctoral fellows are not individually advertised or profiled on our website. We will provide relevant information and answer your questions during the consultation process. You will always be informed that your therapist is practicing under supervision, and you will never be matched with a postdoctoral fellow without your knowledge and consent.

Paying Without Insurance

You do not need insurance coverage to participate in the program. Because insurance plans may not reimburse treatment provided by a postdoctoral permit holder, patients should not assume that these sessions will be eligible for out-of-network reimbursement. We encourage you to contact your insurance company directly if you would like to ask about your benefits.

The reduced fee is intended to make therapy more accessible even when insurance offers limited or no meaningful coverage.

Is Short-Term Therapy Right for Me?

Focused therapy may be helpful when you are experiencing a particular concern or transition, such as:

  • Anxiety, stress, or feeling overwhelmed

  • Depression or changes in mood

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Perfectionism or achievement pressure

  • Trauma-related concerns

  • Adjustment to a major life change

  • Questions about identity, direction, or recurring patterns

  • Difficulties coping with school, work, family, or health-related stress

Our free 15-minute phone consultation will help us understand what you are looking for and whether this program, another therapist within our practice, or a different resource would be the most appropriate fit.
