Melissa Greenberg, PsyD

Founder & Director, Clinical Psychologist

I specialize in working with adolescents, adults, and couples experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression associated with changes in life, including:

  • Changes in romantic relationships (committing, cohabitating, break ups, divorce)

  • Transitioning to a new stage of school and/or career

  • Perinatal mental health (fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, perinatal and postpartum mood and anxiety difficulties)

  • Becoming a parent (family planning, adjusting to parenthood and parenting)

  • Becoming a caretaker

  • Loss and grief

  • Adjusting to new or changing stressors

  • Changes in family, social, and professional relationships

Whether the changes you are experiences are wanted or unwanted, expected or unexpected, they inevitably require adjustment that can be difficult to navigate. I work with people in these circumstances to understand and process the changes they’ve experienced, adjust to new circumstances, and mourn what has been lost or left behind.

I believe, and research shows, that the most important factor in successful therapy is the quality of the therapeutic relationship. It is in the context of a safe and trusting relationship that we can allow ourselves to examine and work through difficult thoughts, feelings, and realities. My priority is thus to offer a genuine, judgment-free, and compassionate space where you feel safe to work through your difficulties and work towards a more fulfilling life. I bring warmth, thoughtfulness, and a strong sense of respect for all to my work. I am LGBTQ+ affirming and welcome individuals of all gender identities and sexual orientations in my practice.

My approach to therapy integrates psychodynamic, emotion-focused, and cognitive-behavioral (CBT) perspectives while also incorporating interventions informed by mindfulness and dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT). This means that, when we begin working together, I will collaborate with you to clarify your goals and address the challenges you are currently facing through coping strategies and actionable steps. As we proceed, I will also work with you to identify, understand, and work through underlying patterns and problems that have contributed to your distress. Typically, this involves examining the relationships and experiences that have impacted you most over the course of your life, including both early experiences and more recent or current ones. This examination makes it possible for us to explore the relational and behavioral patterns that shape who you are today, as well as the implicit narratives that you have constructed over time to make sense of your experiences. These patterns and narratives can be sources of joy and resilience, but they are also often sources of distress, negative self-esteem, and stuckness. My aim in therapy is to help you determine which patterns and narratives help you and promote your wellbeing, and to work with you to address and change the patterns and narratives that hold you back and contribute to your suffering. In my experience, this process deepens self-awareness and also helps people to get unstuck and feel better about themselves and their relationships with others.

Therapy for Adolescents

I work with adolescents aged 14 and older who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, and issues in their relationships with family and/or friends. Adolescence has always been a challenging stage of life due to the complexities of typical developmental processes like developing a sense of self and identity while navigating complex social relationships. Today’s teens also face ever-increasing demands to achieve and perform, and they are bombarded by images from media and social media that contribute to unrealistic ideals of who they should be. I work with teens to provide support and guidance during these often complicated times and to help them develop coping strategies and a stronger, more resilient sense of self.

Couples Therapy

I work with couples in romantic relationships as well as other pairs, such as friends and adult siblings. I will work with you to identify and address problematic patterns in your relationship, improve your communication with each other, resolve conflict, and improve a sense of connectedness. I am always committed to hearing all sides of a story and prioritize making both members of a couple or pair feel heard and understood.
