Therapy for Depression
at Princeton Psychotherapy Center

Depression often presents a particular challenge: the hopelessness and self-doubt it creates are the very things that make it hardest to seek help. It can feel like walking through molasses — everything requires effort, joy feels distant, and the motivation to do the things that might help can feel completely out of reach. People experiencing depression often know something is wrong, and yet may find themselves wondering whether they should just be able to snap out of it. Others around them may wonder the same thing, which can add isolation to an already heavy experience.

Depression can affect every area of life — relationships, work, and the ability to show up in the ways we want to. Withdrawing, underperforming, falling through on commitments — these are often symptoms, not character flaws, and yet they can feel like evidence that something is fundamentally wrong with you rather than something you're going through.

For many people with depression, one of the most important things therapy offers is simply being seen accurately — by someone who understands what's happening rather than someone who is frustrated by it. Therapy can also help you understand what's driving your depression and find ways through the paralysis it creates, working toward feeling less heavy and more able to engage with the things that matter.

Our Approach

Our therapists draw from different research-supported approaches, including CBT, DBT, psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, and integrative therapy. Each offers a different path to change, and you may find that one resonates more than another depending on your concerns and what feels right for you. Some conditions — including OCD and insomnia — have specific evidence-based treatments with strong research support, and our therapists have specialized training in those approaches. The match between you and your therapist matters. Finding someone whose approach and areas of expertise feel like the right fit is something we take seriously — and it's something we're happy to help you think through in a free 15-minute consultation.
